Closing Comments by Christina Martinez, Project Officer, European Commission

  • EC is an observer in the community
  • noticed a lot of similarities with work in clusters (esp. FINES Cluster)
  • FI needs to adapt to user needs
  • FINeS cluster has been innovative in approach
    • user at centre of priorities
    • enterprises are the users we want to serve
  • Internet has many instantiations – Iot, Sensors, private etc.
    • propose convergence of these networks towards the user
      • intelligent network agents representing users
      • services find the appropriate users rather than other ways around
      • serve societal objectives
  • Want building augmented internet to serve needs of enterprises and SMEs in particular
  • Some practicalities
    • EC, FINES working hard
    • position paper to be published next week
    • next consulation open in Jan
    • opportunites to input to research roadmap until end of March
    • more we converge the better
    • EC FINES committed to serve the enteprise
  • Call to action: What are we waiting for!!

Discussion

  • What kind of convergence between private/public/sensor networks etc? Some responses:
    • Convergence should take place at all levels. Services. Smart Objects. Cannot afford to do research in isolation
    • Diffused entrepreneurship – at all levels. Will require complex dynamic systems etc.
    • Convergence in 6 pillars of FI is appreciated and being worked
    • If required by business, systems will converge. We are going in the right direction.
    • EC appreciates this needs to happen at all levels of the stack and is working this. Need to articulate this. Maybe purpose based approach.
    • BBC agrees convergence would be great but notes convergence may be on user experience rather than on platforms
  • What is FI Enterprise perspective of Innovation? What kind of instruments will be appropriate?
    • Time ran out before this question could be answered.
  • Service/applications important but so too is infrastructure – public support required for R&D here too
    • General agreement with this.

Summing up

  • All presenters and participants thanked.
  • Planned session topic at FI Budapest in May 2011: Enteprise inputs into architectures of FI

FIA Valencia Enterprise – Open Panel Discussion

April 15, 2010

Welcome to the second post from the FIA Valencia Enteprise session. Here we summarise the second portion of the meeting, the open panel discussion. The post has been updated during the  session so the discussion could be followed and reviewed  in realtime online. This post will be refined in the coming days, after the caretakers meet to review. Please, add your comments  if there is anything you would like to contribute.

Our panel includes Stefano De Panfilis, EFII, Thomas Michael Bohnert, SAP and Miguel Borrras, Antara.

The discussion is addressing three topics. The context is explained in the Welcome and Introduction slides.

Vision, moderated by Man-Sze Li, IC Focus and Stefano De Panfilis, EFII

  • What does exit from crises mean?
  • Is it time to rethink nature of business?
  • Innovation Union?
  • Do enterprises deserve a generic research domain?
  • From the floor:
  • Robustness of the internet? What happens if catestrophic failure? Airports can check in manually. Can talk to bank staff. What if everything online? What is plan B? Military have redundant internet.
  • What about enterprises of the present? Are we discarding the old? Or can they upgrade, so to say. How do we get from now to the future?
  • What about SMEs that aren’t / can’t afford to be ICT savvy.
  • Reinventing products – what does this mean? Can generic strategies be applied?
  • From the panel:
  • Think of it as an evolution. Maintain backward compatibilty. Must not exclude anyone from progress. COIN IP addressing this. Looking at maturity models. For SMEs and micro enterprises also. Looking into what is the IT support available to support enterprise growth. However, also revolutionary part to FI to be expected. Not business as usual. Need to reconcile evolution and revolution. Potentially a significant challenge.
  • SME employees use FaceBook etc. at home, why not at work? SMEs should consider federation. Could open up significant opportunities.
  • FI needs to be based on open standards.
  • Is there such a thing as a Future Internet that can be switched on? To clarify, it is an evolution that also supports revolution. Mission, Organisation, intangibles also need to be looked at.
  • FI relevant to enterprises of all sizes.
  • FI allows faster response times. Reinventing not the business, but the market position and interaction.
  • Internet must be a community. SMEs have all levels of ICT awareness. e.g. printing emails and bringing them to face to face meetings instead of emailing response. Need to take this onboard.
  • If you go into business you want to win. Need to offer value. Harder and softer values. Nature of what business is is potentially changing. Those willing to take risks more likely to succeed.
  • Did Europe miss the boat on Web 2.0 as mentioned yesterday? How can this be addressed?

Business Models, moderated byMichele Missikoff, CNR and Jean-Dominique Meunier, Technicolor

  • What will be the key drivers?
  • What will be the characteristic elements of those models?
  • Are there emerging examples of those business models? Buy a personal transport service rather than a car??
  • What are the lessons that can be learnt so far? Are there barriers already?
  • Commodity – what does that mean for business models? Focus on value added services only? Give the rest for free? What is SAP’s experience?
  • SAP have business by design – translate business processes on demand. Overall set of features perhaps 10x size of salesforce. Commoditization is very important. Exists, is secure, there are fall backs. Customer is asking for it – needs to be delivered.
  • From yesterday, ‘Greatest innovation comes from commoditised businesses’.
  • For businesses that use commodity, what does this mean for them. Do they have a voice? The customer voice is getting stronger.
  • SAP has undergone several transformations internally. Netweaver before, then apps on platform, now services sold around the software provided. Ongoing evolution.
  • Emerging models of BMs? New models seem to depend on traditional enterprises. How do traditional enterprises, e.g farmers, get involved. Some companies are selling products for SMEs. They don’t care if it is FI – they just want to improve their business.
  • Huge changes even in tranditional enteprises like automatic. Maybe no such thing as traditional enterprise.
  • US companies largely internet based. European players largely existing business, using internet to expand. Can FI open up new industries? New Business Models derived from data captured from online technologies. Do we just think about evolving existing businesses rather than thinking outside the box?
  • There are examples of transformations in Europe. Huge mobile players today emerged from completely different industries.
  • 5 year time research to innovation – that’s a long time for SMEs. Many SMEs are still not engaged.
  • World leaders not EU based. Not telco based. Can an entirely new industry be launched in Europe based on services? If following others we will always lag behind. Mobile industry was started from nothing. Can that be replicated?
  • PPP is a key opportunity for forming this new platform.
  • Europe is much more fragmented than US…languages and culture. Needs to be taken onboard…but maybe there are unique opportunities here too.

Future Internet Systems, moderated by Sergio Gusmeroli, TXT & John Kennedy, Intel

  • Which FI technologies will help revolutionsise Enterprise Systems?
  • Which product lifecycle phases is FI raising the more promising opportunities?
  • Is FI an Innovation Opportunity for European ICT SMEs?
  • From the floor…
  • FI gives Europe a significant opportunity to maximise value for business, society, indivudals, going forward. Living Labs offers one way of helping to identify and values.
  • US v EU. Is that valid comparison any more? What if China buys the company.
  • Is there a difference between perspectives of East and West Europe on FI?
  • Slovenia, returned back from Eastern Europe. Danube River region now forming. New ways for companies to work together. Cross border, experimental, powered by ICT to create new and better businesses. Keen to engage with broader FIA Enterprise community. River used to be the border, now bringing companies together. FI providing even more opportunities on a global scale.
  • What do FI tech pillars mean for business? Bottom line is what combinations deliver the most value.
  • FI PPP is exactly addressing this. Is not about developing new technologies, but about making existing generic enablers federatable and integratable so specific instances can be built together.
  • In FP, what is mechanism to extract lessons from individual projects to other sectors. E.g. Smart Grids to other sectors. E.g. to SMEs.
  • FI PPP has 8 use cases to provide broad understanding and sharing required. To inform the most promising 5 pilots.
  • What does Service transition mean for Product based companies. How do businesses get value from data in the future? Maybe programme needs to be updated to share lessons learned. Does KICS address this?
  • Need to educate business see the opportunities.

With this the session is brought to a close with some closing comments.

It has been a busy and highly interactive two hours. There is a wide spectum of views on the kind of business models which would be promising for european businesses and how FI technologies could support and enable them. This is something we want to pursue going forward, and into FIA Ghent. The session agreed that a useful session topic would be scenarios for the future of business on the internet of the future. Sincere thanks to everyone who attended and participated, in the room and online.

Please, please, continue the discussion and contributions online.

FIA Valencia Enterprise – Presentations

April 15, 2010

Welcome to the FIA Valencia Enteprise session. Here we summarise the first portion of the meeting, the various presentations. The post was updated during the  session so the discussion could be followed and reviewed realtime online. The post will be refined in the coming days, after the caretakers meet to review. Please, continue to add your comments if there is anything you would like to contribute.

Welcome by Man-Sze Li, IC Focus.

  • Welcome and Introduction (PDF)
  • Everyone’s awake
  • Looking forward to exciting 2 hours ahead on what FI means for Enterprise
  • In collaboration with DG INFSO, FInES Cluster, EFII, FIA Working Groups and indeed you we hope
  • Results of open consultation at enterprise session in FIA Stockholm presented
    • A straw poll
    • Total concensus: top priority on business models and relationships.
    • Majority interest on important of definition of research stream.
    • A lot of interest on impact of FI in enterprises in Europe
  • We want to stimulate further debate
  • SMEs of particular interest
  • Session Context:
    • Business as usual is over
    • PPP impact on society at large
    • DNA of future internet
  • Please participate!!!

Invited speakers:

Stefano De Panfilis, EFII

  • FI and Enterprises (PDF)
  • What can FI Technologies deliver for enterprises?
  • What can enterprise contribute to FI PPP?
  • Internet of People, Knowledge, Things, Networks, Services, …indeed Internet of Business Processes introduced yesterday
  • FI benefits for the citizen, for (dynamic) communities. Indeed FI supports creation of dynamic communities. For the enterprise it is a significant opportunity, at least indirectly. e.g. Selling an app allowing painting with fingers on iPhone  for a few dollars – the developer is now a millionaire!
  • How about direct benefit for enterprise?
  • Yes, if: enterprises evolve, willing to change
  • Need FI supporting technologies: XaaS!!!
  • FI Core Platform: unified and consolidated. Open. Hardware, Software, Network.
  • Based on FI Generic Enablers
  • So why not a Use Case project from the FInES community

Discussion

  • This last point derived from experience here in FI Valencia

Thomas Michael Bohnert, SAP

  • SAP Vision – Enterprise Context (PDF)
  • Representing SAP, FIRA
  • What are our requirements?
  • Services are driving economies
  • Companies on a global scale – global business network
  • Large chain of enterprises
  • Increasing global competition
  • Need to increase efficiency effectiveness for Europe to be competitive
  • Aware of increasing risks and risk potentials
  • Mortgage crisis in US triggered by a single bank decision in Singapore
  • How can this be addressed?
  • Web based service economies and business intelligence
  • FI – needs to be a holistic framework. IoT, IoS, NoF, CC, … very aligned with Stefano’s previous presentation
  • IoT? – allows high resolution management, next generation business apps. More insight, to the next level.
  • Video: integrated comms with a car. Business trips. availalbe to 3rd parties. Internet based odometer. Anonymised. Eco-sensitive. CO emmissions tracked. Will allow Eco cert for car pools to be generated. E.g. can prove env. friendly transport. Increase resale value. Where is local/cheapest fuel? Integrated with Gallelio. Journey has just begun!
  • IoT offers real business opportunties for motor industry
  • Improved logistics
  • Improved fleet management
  • IoT not standalone. needs to be in parallel with IoS.
  • One architecture can address these needs. See deck for first sketch of FIRA recommendations for architecture.
  • The PPP is a big opportuntity for this holistic framework.
  • FIRA not to be confused with ‘G16′ proposal

Discussion after next presentation, getting the SME perspective.

Miguel Borrras, Antara

  • What Does FI Mean for Enterprise (PDF)
  • What does FI mean for the enterprise?
  • It is so difficult to be ME !! Signature problems etc.
  • FI means TRUST for enterprise. A research issue. Must be easy to use.
  • Identity card in Spain is interesting progress for example, but does not answer all questions.
  • Are storms brewing behind the approaching Cloud?
  • Who controls MY data?
  • Yet another buzz word…which approach will prevail???
  • e.g. is IBM Cloud effort mainly SaaS?
  • Web 2.0 killed the semantic star?
  • Will ther ebe a Web 3.0? Web 2.0 has killed it.
  • Semantic grid on consumer side: Semantics for competitive intelligence
  • Collaborative Web: can be seen as a leaking faucet for enterprises
  • Save water, save the company
  • % of leaking of comercially sensitive information increasing all the time.
  • FI means Company Intellectual Rights Management. Seems to be missing as a research topic.

Open to the floor…

  • Clarification from the floor: IBM not just SaaS
  • Disagreement with Semantic web 3 killing web 2.0. Web 3 facilitiates web 2.0. Prosumer now emerging. Generating content. People moving to simpler languages from web of documents to web of data.
  • In response, different semantic initiaves are seperate/standalone/silos. If not automatic semantic inferencing, semantic web will not prevail. Bet proposed!!
  • @Thomas Michael. Are fun elements only with US companies? How will FIRA respond to user needs? A lot of key players from many domains invited to contribute user requirements. FI addressing society needs, gaming has a lower priority.
  • Thomas responsed to online comment – not just institutional inputs in scope. Broader inputs being solicited.

FI Enterprise Systems Research Roadmap update by Michele Missikoff, CNR.
